(ANSA) - Genoa, February 26 - The president of the Italian
Bishops' Conference, Cardinal Angelo Bagnasco, called for
'serious reflection' from the country's political leaders in
light of the stalemate produced by the general election results. The archbishop of Genoa described the situation ensuing from the recent poll as a "major, serious message for the political sphere, upon which those responsible, and therefore most affected, need to reflect seriously".
Cardinal Bagnasco added that he did not want to "enter into the merit" of the election results, which gave Pier Luigi Bersani's centre-left alliance a majority in the lower house of parliament but no party or coalition a working majority in the Senate. However, "it seems the people showed a major desire to participate," he said.
