(ANSA) - Rome, February 25 - Ex-premier Silvio Berlusconi's
centre-right alliance hailed the result of Italy's general
election as "extraordinary" after it gained enough support to
stop Pier Luigi Bersani's centre left having a working majority
in parliament.Although Berlusconi will not have enough seats to form an Italian government for the fourth time, he will see the result as good, as his coalition was trailing by a big margin at the start of the campaign. "The result is very positive, I'd even say extraordinary," said Angelino Alfano, the secretary of Berlusconi's centre-right People of Freedom (PdL) party "We're very satisfied" .
The centre-right was down by double digits at the start of the campaign season and few thought Berlusconi, who led the country before being forced to step down at the peak of the euro crisis in late 2011, would be able any chance of turning its fortunes around after re-entering politics late last year.
"I spoke to Berlusconi today to thank him," said Alfano.
