PdL's Alfano calls center-right performance 'extraordinary'
'We believe we have relative majority in Senate'25 February, 21:24
We're very satisfied," said Alfano, who the party says will become premier if it wins. The PdL was down by double digits at the start of the campaign season and few thought Berlusconi, who led the country before being forced to step down at the peak of the euro crisis in late 2011, had any chance of re-entering politics. After polling stations closed Monday, tallies from Italy's interior ministry showed the center-right bloc led by the PdL was under 2% behind the frontrunner center left in the Senate, and about 2% behind in the House. Both votes were too close to call by late evening in Italy.
"I spoke to Berlusconi today to thank him," said Alfano.
"We believe to have the relative majority in the Senate. We're waiting with serenity for the results in the House".
