(ANSA) - Rome, February 25 - A top aide to center-left
leader Pier Luigi Bersani said Italy risked having to hold
another round of elections as votes were tallied amid a tight
race Monday.
Stefano Fassina called the results "worrisome", adding
there was "a risk of having to go back to the polls" as current
projections suggested it would be "difficult to form a
government".
"It is evident that such a scenario would present very
serious problems for Italy," he said.
Recent projections from public broadcaster Rai showed the
race in the Senate was neck and neck, with the center-right bloc
headed by ex-premier Silvio Berlusconi 1.2% ahead of the center
left. But a projection from Mediaset, the private broadcaster owned by Berlusconi, showed the center left to be in the lead.
