Italians must return to the forefront, says Monti
'Immovable' politicians responsible for 20 lost years

(ANSA) - Rome, February 22 - Outgoing technocrat Premier
Mario Monti on Friday said Italians must be put back at the
centre of public life if the country is to experience a rebirth."Italy can be reborn if it puts citizens, who have all too often been treated as subjects in recent years, back at the centre," said Monti in Florence at the close of his campaign for election as premier on a reformist platform in general elections this weekend. "It is necessary to tackle the issues of political costs and the elimination of waste," he continued. "(There are) many things that the right and the left haven't had the courage to do". Monti also said the last 20 wasted years were the fruit of an immovable political class "that has discouraged the entire country, especially the younger generations".
