Italian broadcasting system needs reform, Bersani says
Center-left leader suggests partial privatization of RAI

(ANSA) - Rome, February 22 - Democratic Party (PD) head and
centre-left leader Pier Luigi Bersani on Friday called for
reform of the current broadcasting system in Italy and appeared
to express possible support for the partial privatisation of
state broadcaster RAI.
"The Gasparri law needs to be reformulated," Bersani told
an ANSA forum, referring to the 2004 law passed by the then
government of Silvio Berlusconi regulating broadcast media
including RAI.
"Each company needs to produce its own industrial plan"
concerning not just channels but also broadcasting capacity, he
continued."To achieve this the governance needs to be able to make proposals, it cannot be a minister who draws up the industrial plan". Bersani also said he had been the first person to say just one private broadcaster was not enough 20 years ago. "I don't have any problem with (privatisation)," he told ANSA. "Only now the word 'partial' has taken on many new meanings compared to the 1990s".
