Bersani says deficit better but economy worse

Will try to avoid supplementary budget, centre-left leader says

Bersani says deficit better but economy worse (ANSA) - Rome, February 22 - The Italian budget deficit is better but the economy is worse off since outgoing Premier Mario Monti took over from Silvio Berlusconi 14 months ago, centre-left leader Pier Luigi Bersani told an ANSA forum Friday.

"The deficit is beginning to come under control but it is the real economy that isn't moving," said the Democratic Party leader, leading ex-premier Silvio Berlusconi in polls ahead of Sunday and Monday's general election.

Bersani, who many pundits see as likely to become the next premier, indicated he would do his best to avoid a supplementary budget if public finances were in good-enough shape for European Union criteria.

"I'm against supplemenetary budgets," Bersani said.
