Bersani compliments ANSA for papal scoop and Latin savvy

(ANSA) - Rome, February 22 - Pier Luigi Bersani, center-left leader, made his final comments at the ANSA forum on Friday in Latin, complimenting the agency's scoop of the pope's resignation announcement on February 11 thanks to Latin-savvy reporter Giovanna Chirri.

"I would like to make a final statement. I send best wishes to Italians for Sunday and I will do it in Latin because you are the ones (ANSA) who know Latin - I hope that it will be 'dies candida nota signanda' (a day on which a clean vote should be cast).

ANSA's Chirri was the first to report the resignation of Pope Benedict XVI thanks to her polished Latin skills.

"It made me cry," said Chirri. "I fought to keep my nerve despite my knees feeling weak".

Chirri was among just a few journalists in the Vatican press room last Monday during a routine consistory when the pope, 85, announced in Latin he was stepping down due to age and declining health.
