(ANSA) - Vatican City, February 21 - Benedict XVI will salute the cardinals who will elect his successor as pope at 11:00 on February 28, nine hours before he formally steps down, Vatican spokesman Father Federico Lombardi said Thursday.

Benedict announced on February 11 he was abdicating, an unprecedented step in modern times.
