Fini says female president would make Italy more credible (ANSA) - Rome, February 20 - Italian House Speaker Gianfranco Fini came out in favor of electing a female president of Italy on Wednesday. "It would lend a lot of credibility to Italian politics if the first female president were elected," he told a forum organized by ANSA. "Obviously without giving particular names," he added.

The parliament, which is up for reelection this Sunday and Monday, will be charged with electing a new president in May when President Giorgio Napolitano steps down at the end of his seven-year term. Fini called Napolitano "a moral guide for Italians" over the years.
