Mayor in underpants to protest new rubbish tax (ANSA) - Parma, February 19 - A local administrator on Tuesday threatened to appear before the official Rome residence of the President of the Republic in just his underpants in protest over the new local council rubbish tax (Tares) introduced by the technocrat government led by Mario Monti. Luigi Lucchi, mayor of Berceto in the province of Parma, said he would make the unusual protest in Piazza del Quirinale on March 22 after sending a long letter to President Giorgio Napolitano in which he threatened to resign. "The protest is to stave off the closure of bars and restaurants which will see their costs skyrocket under the new tax," he explained, adding that such businesses would see their costs more than triple.
