(ANSA) - New Delhi, February 18 - The supreme court of India
on Tuesday will examine a request by the two Italian marines on
trial there to return to Italy to exercise their right to vote
in general elections, judicial sources told ANSA Monday.
Massimiliano Latorre and Salvatore Girone have been at the
center of an international dispute since last February for
allegedly shooting Jelestine Valentine and Ajesh Binki from
aboard the oil tanker Enrica Lexie, mistaking them for pirates. If granted a special leave petition, the two would be permitted to come to Italy for elections on February 24-25, and to spend time with their families. For one year the Italian government has been working to try the men in Italian courts since the events took place aboard an Italian ship in international waters.
