(ANSA) - Rome, February 18 - The cost of a full tank of gas
in Italy has overtaken that of weekly food expenditures,
farmers' association Coldiretti said on Monday. It costs 112 euros to fill a 60-litre tank, exceeding the 111-euro average an Italian households spends each week for shopping, according to Italian statistics agency Istat. The price of one liter of gas now exceeds a pound of pasta by 40% and a liter of milk by 50%. Coldiretti warns that the increase is not "ethically or economically sustainable and that it threatens the country's recovery".
