Porcupines saved near homes in Apennine mountains (ANSA) - Modena, February 15 - Forest rangers in the Modenese Apennine mountain range say that they have rescued eight porcupines over the last several days, the latest overnight Thursday.

A porcupine, in a state of extreme hypothermia, was spotted by residents in the area stranded on a steep slope not far from a cluster of homes.

On Wednesday, two baby porcupines who most likely lost their mother in recent ice and snowstorms were found trying to take shelter near a home and taken to a wildlife rescue clinic along with the other animals.

The rescued animals will be released after weather conditions improve.

Wildlife authorities say the porcupines are shy, nocturnal animals that are not dangerous, but that wildlife rescue workers should be alerted if an animal is found in urban areas.
