Archbishop says pope made choice 'in conscience before God'

(ANSA) - Milan, February 15 - Pope Benedict XVI's decision
to retire at the end of this month was reasoned and taken "in
conscience before God," the archbishop of Milan said Friday.In a letter to the faithful, to be read at Mass this Sunday, Cardinal Angelo Scola said the Pope made his choice "in complete freedom and motivated only the good of the Church".
Scola is said to be the European favourite to succeed Benedict, after two African front-runners and a Canadian.
