Thieves steal 200 manhole covers in Sicilian town (ANSA) - Gela, February 14 - Public safety authorities in the Sicilian city of Gela said on Thursday that they are battling an alarming trend of thievery involving manhole covers.

Robbers have stolen approximately 200 grates and iron covers, mostly on the city's outskirts, leaving sewer holes dangerously exposed.

City Mayor Angelo Fasulo has launched an appeal for citizens to report the thieves if seen and to be extra-cautious on the road.

Those responsible are believed to be stealing the iron to resell.

Each cover costs the city 600 euros, meaning that the municipal budget to replace them so far is 120,000 euros.
