(ANSA) Bergamo, February 14 - Traces of a potentially lethal
fungus were found in the intensive care rooms of the new Papa
Giovanni XXIII hospital in Bergamo. The fungus was discovered during investigations into the deaths of four patients, according to daily Corriere della Sera's Bergamo edition on Thursday.
No direct connection between the presence of the fungus - which can cause severe respiratory infections and lead to death - and the four deaths has as yet been established.
The deceased patients had all been hospitalized in critical condition and trace amounts of the fungus found on their bodies, according to preliminary investigations, were not enough to kill.
The fungus was discovered a week ago following an inspection in the hospital which revealed that air filters in the intensive care units did not respect national health norms.
