(ANSA) - Naples, February 14 - The government and town of
Pompeii on Thursday launched an international ideas competition
to develop the main local attractions and enhance the culture
and tourism sector in the area.Participants are being asked to seek possible synergies between Pompeii's two major draws, the archaeological area comprising the ancient Roman commercial centre destroyed by the eruption of Mount Vesuvius in 79 AD, and the 19th-century Shrine of the Blessed Virgin of the Rosary.
They are then also to link them to other lesser local attractions to encourage visitors to spend longer in the area. The competition - details of which are posted on the website www.99ideas.it - is open to all interested parties and lasts 60 days. The launch coincides with the start of a 105-million euro project to restore the UNESCO World Heritage Site site and protect it from the repeated structural collapses and water damage that have plagued it in recent years.
