(ANSA) - Vatican City, February 12 - Benedict XVI's papal
ring will be "terminated" following his resignation this month,
the Vatican announced Tuesday.
According to Vatican Spokesman Federico Lombardi, the
symbol of the papacy will likely be broken after he officially
steps down February 28, but he stressed that experts were
working to determine proper etiquette.
Benedict, 85, announced Monday he was stepping down due to
physical frailty and advancing age, becoming the first pontiff
in history to resign for health-related reasons.
Known as the Fisherman's Ring, the golden symbol of papal
power shows St Peter fishing.
According to Lombardi, "objects strictly tied to the
ministry of St Peter must be destroyed".
