(ANSA) - Reggio Calabria, February 12 - Police on Tuesday
arrested 65 people in the southern region of Calabria thought to
belong to the local 'Ndrangheta crime syndicate on suspicion of
drug and weapons-related crimes. The suspects allegedly belonged to the Iamonte clan, which investigators say controlled all economic activity in and around the seaside town of Melito di Porto Salvo on the toe of Italy's 'boot'.
They now face possible charges of mafia association aimed at buying and selling weapons and drugs. The mayor of Melito di Porto Salvo, Gesualdo Costantino, is among the detainees.
