Lombardy governor hits back at result of healthcare probe

Hints timing of prosecutors' conclusions politically motivated

Lombardy governor hits back at result of healthcare probe (ANSA) - Milan, February 12 - Outgoing Lombardy Governor Roberto Formigoni on Tuesday hit back at Milan prosecutors who earlier in the day said he was part of a health-sector fraud.

In a statement late Tuesday, Formigoni hinted that the prosecutors' announcement had political ends.

"The timing of the prosecutors is, as always, very efficient: how far is one willing to go to cover the scandal at MPS, which risks crushing the left?" Formigoni asked, referring to a fraud probe concurrently underway at lender Monte dei Paschi di Siena, which is closely associated with Italy's left-wing political establishment.

Earlier Tuesday the prosecutors closed a multi-million-euro fraud investigation into the Pavia-based Maugeri healthcare foundation and suspects including Formigoni.

Formigoni, who denies wrongdoing, faces charges of criminal conspiracy related to health-sector contracts and allegedly pocketing eight million euros. He was among 17 suspects in the probe.
