Pope Benedict XVI underwent surgery in a Rome clinic to replace
his pacemaker, Italian financial daily paper il Sole 24 Ore said
on Tuesday. The 85-year-old pontiff, who announced on Monday that he would be stepping down as leader of the Catholic church, was operated on in "complete secrecy" at the Pio XI medical center, but did not miss performing the Sunday Angelus previous to or after the surgery, said the paper.
Benedict said in Latin that his "ingravescentem aetatem", his 'advanced age', was the reason he had decided to step down as pontiff at the end of this month.
