(ANSA) - Milan, February 11 - Heavy snow, which moved in
Monday morning, will continue across much of Italy through early
Tuesday, according to an Italian aeronautical military weather
forecast. The northern regions of Liguria, Piedmont, Emilia-Romagna and southern Lombardy are expected to be particularly hard hit.
Eleven regions banned tractor-trailers from travelling in 11 Italian regions due to the snow.
The prefect of Florence confirmed its 48-hour injunction on Monday afternoon, but introduced exceptions for trucks carrying fuel, perishable goods, live animals, provided they are outfitted with snow chains or tires.
Emergency and street maintenance vehicles were also allowed to circulate. On Monday, 500 farming tractors were rallied to plough snow by the agricultural association Coldiretti in the Italian region Emilia-Romagna.
The tractors are clearing roads to ensure food transport to towns and cities, as well as the delivery of animal feed and other supplies to farms. Ferries for the Tuscan tourist-destination Elba island were suspended from the port of Piombino.
