Pope's brother knew 'months ago' (ANSA) - Berlin, February 11 - The pope's brother knew he was going to quit months ago, German daily Die Welt said after Benedict XVI shocked the world with his announcement Monday. "I had been informed" Father Georg Ratzinger, choirmaster at Regensburg Cathedral, told the daily.

Father Ratzinger said his 85-year-old brother, four years younger than himself, was looking forward to "more tranquility in his old age".

Benedict said he is stepping down February 28 because his age means he lacks the strength to do an increasingly demanding job properly.
