PD chief Bersani says elections will not be inconclusive
Says his party will win a clear majority as Italians want change

(ANSA) - Rome, February 7 - The leader of Italy's Democratic Party (PD), which polls indicate is favored to win most votes in upcoming parliamentary elections, on Thursday excluded the possibility that Italians might have to vote again if results on the February 24 poll don't produce a clear majority.
Speaking to journalists, Pierluigi Bersani, the secretary of the PD and likely future premier should his party win the elections, said that "A serious country cannot keep holding elections".
Responding to questions about the possibility of a hung election result, Bersani said, "I am making a forecast - this won't happen because I think that Italians will take a direction and ask for change. Who wins in the country will govern in both the House and Senate".
Recent polls show the once-double-digit gap between the PD and the center-right People of Freedom (PdL) party, headed by former premier and media mogul Silvio Berlusconi, narrowing a few weeks before the elections.
A centrist group led by caretaker Premier Mario Monti is in third place.
