Temporary layoffs in Italy up 62% (ANSA) - Rome, February 5 - Italian companies buffeted by the uncertain economic winds are increasingly relying on state-backed temporary layoff schemes or reduced work hours to avoid having to reduce their workforces, social security agency INPS said Tuesday.

In a statement, INPS said that in January 88.9 million hours of so-called cassa integrazione temporary layoffs were authorized, up 2.7% on December and up a whopping 61.6% from January 2012.
