Italian engineer held since December 17 in Syria released (ANSA) - Rome, February 4 - An engineer from Catania, 63-year-old Mario Belluomo, seized in Syria on December 17 was freed on Monday along with two other hostages, the Russian Foreign Ministry said.

The ministry said the engineer was transferred through the Syrian foreign ministry to Italian officials. The two Russian citizens are reportedly in good health at the Russian embassy in Damascus. According to Russian foreign ministry sources, the two Russian citizens were released in an exchange agreement. Belluomo was working in Syria as a consultant for Syrian company Himsho in its industrial complex south of Homs when he was abducted.
