Pilot's helmet found where American F-16 went missing (ANSA) - Cervia, January 31 - A pilot's helmet has been recovered off Italy's northern Adriatic coast near where an American F-16 fighter jet went missing Monday. In an ongoing search, rescuers recovered a parachute on Wednesday, and other fragments have been found in the area near the town of Cervia. The pilot lost contact with controllers at around 8pm local time on Monday after taking off from the Aviano Air Base in northern Italy.

Sources at Aviano's Pagliano e Gori airport, which has jurisdiction over flights from the US airbase, said the fear is a technical problem occurred that was "so sudden and serious that the pilot did not have time to activate the mechanism that makes it possible to eject, after having established that the plane could not cause risks for the local population".
