Fiat plant near Naples sees orders jump for Panda mini-car (ANSA) - Pomigliano d'Arco, Naples, January 29 - Orders for cars produced at Italian car maker Fiat SpA's factory in Pomigliano d'Arco, near Naples, are on the rise and the company will not need to rely on temporary layoffs at the plant at the end of February, the first time since August that the facility's 2,615 workers won't have to stay home from work.

According to union sources at the plant, work time is on the rise thanks to increased orders of the company's Panda mini-car, which used to be produced in Poland but has been repatriated to Italy as part of Fiat's efforts to re-launch its Italian industrial base.

Production of natural gas and lng-powered vehicles at the plant are also helping boost production rates.

According to the union sources, orders have reached 20,000 units at the plant, enough to keep it running on a continuous basis for about two months.

On January 28 workers at the Pomigliano plant were forced to begin another one week period of temporary layoffs, the sixth consecutive such suspension since August, as the company struggles with a massive drop in European demand which has also hit most of its European rivals.
