Finance police crackdowns save 6.5 billion euros in Italy
Over 9,000 cited for false social security and welfare claims

(ANSA) - Rome, January 28 - Italian finance police said on
Monday that efforts to crack down on tax fraud saved the country
over 6.5 billion euros in 2012.Investigations uncovered approximately 3,500 "fraudulent poor" claiming social benefits such as access to subsidized child care and other services for children, reductions in school meals, student scholarships, home health care and social services.
Police cited 9,632 people for false social security and welfare claims costing the state coffers 103 million euros. Property worth over 348 million euros belonging to over 4,600 alleged fraudsters was confiscated, police said.
