Approximately 70 animals including cattle, sheep and dogs were found in cages or on short chains exposed to the cold, covered in excrement and many on the verge of starvation.

Police also found animal carcasses in an advanced state of decomposition.

The farm located in the small town of Gioia Sannitica has been impounded and the owner faces charges of mismanagement, animal abuse, cruelty and abandonment. Investigators reported that the establishment previously requested and received European Union development funding.
