Italian MP, Senate candidate sentenced to jail for fraud
Banned from office, vows to appeal

(ANSA) - Milan, January 24 - An MP from the southern region of Campania running for a Senate seat in the February 24-25 national elections has been sentenced to three years and three months in prison for fraud.
Gerardo Soglia, an MP running under the banner of the Big South (Grande Sud) electoral list of the center-right, was accused of fraud over the bankruptcy of travel company Buon Viaggio, which collapsed in 2010. "I am totally innocent have nothing to do with the crimes leveled against me and, soon, by appealing, I will demonstrate (my innocence) with a full acquittal," Soglia said Thursday after the sentencing.
Prosecutors also asked that Soglia, an entrepreneur in the tourism industry and president of Pescara Calcio soccer club, be banned from serving in public office for five years.
