Oil spill clean-up underway off Adriatic coast
Source of spill unknown22 January, 15:08
(ANSA) - Pescara, January 22 - Clean-up operations were underway Tuesday following an oil spill off Italy's Adriatic coast near the border between the regions of Abruzzo and Molise.
The spill, estimated at 1,000 litres, was reported Monday night by an oil tanker in the Rospo Mare oil field located roughly 19 kilometers from the port of Termoli.
Italian energy companies Edison and Eni, which operate the field, subsequently suspended production and activated emergency and anti-pollution procedures in conjunction with the competent authorities to contain and clean up the spill. On Tuesday morning coast guard divers also inspected the oil platform to try to identify the source of the spill. The Rospo Mare oil field has been in production since 1982 and has extracted 92 million barrels of crude.
