European Commission probes ENI facilities in Taranto (ANSA) - Brussels, January 22 - The European Commission on Tuesday said it had opened two probes into possible violations of industrial accident directives at facilities owned by Italian energy giant ENI in the southern Italian city of Taranto.

The Commission said it was investigating whether the project for a refinery and natural gas pipeline violated the Seveso directives, which seek to prevent industrial accidents. Erminia Mazzoni, the head of the Commission's petitions commission, which acted after receiving complaints of violations from a local interest group, said: ''Another dangerous intermingling of the right to work and the right to health. Once again in Taranto. The nth probe against our country, which creates preoccupation and generates discredit. I hope the intent isn't to transform this episode into another ILVA.'' ILVA's steel plant in Taranto has been the center of an environmental dispute between local prosecutors and the national government.
