Major Pompeii restoration works set to begin in January
Minister says results will show Italy is still a great country20 December, 18:56
(ANSA) - Naples, December 20 - Works for a large project to secure and improve access to the ruins of Pompeii will begin no later than January, a government minister said Thursday.
The Grand Pompeii Project (Grande Progetto Pomepi), which has financial backing from the European Commission as well as the Italian government, calls for investing some 105 million euros in restoration and conservation works at the world-famous site that came to symbolize the failings of the Italian state after some of the area's most famous buildings collapsed in November 2010.
"Work at the first two construction sites of the Grande Progetto Pompei will begin by the end of January" and these will "demonstrate how Italy was grand not only more than 2,000 years ago but how it remains so today," commented Fabrizio Barca, the minister for territorial cohesion.
