(ANSA) - Vatican City, November 8 - The committee of
cardinals Pope Benedict VXI charged with investigating the
Vatileaks case has given its favourable opinion for a papal
pardon for Paolo Gabriele, the butler at the centre of the
recent document-theft scandal, according to sources close to
Garbiele's family. The pope's former butler, Gabriele, was convicted to one and a half years in prison on October 6 for ''aggravated theft''.
He had stolen and leaked confidential Vatican papers.
The Pope had last summer already manifested his intention to pardon Gabriele, when he sent him an autographed book with a blessing inside.
The book was sent after the pontiff received Gabriele's letter of apology, according to unnamed sources close to Gabriele's family.
