Man acquitted of motorway telepass fraud (ANSA) - Palermo, October 12 - A Messina appeals court on Friday upheld a petition by a Sicilian shopkeeper against an earlier sentence for driving through the Telepass-only lane of a motorway toll station without paying.

The man from Barcellona Pozzo di Gotto was sentenced to eight months in jail for fraud after having on 24 occasions driven at speed through a raised Telepass toll gate on the Palermo-Messina motorway in the wake of the preceding car. The defendant appealed against the sentence on grounds that he had been acting in broad daylight.
