'Leading' 'Ndrangheta fugitive caught
Domenico Condello on the run for 20 years11 October, 12:11
Domenico Condello, nicknamed 'Micu 'u pazzù' (Crazy Micu) had been on the run for 20 years, since 1992.
He was on the list of Italy's 30 most-wanted men.
Condello, 56, head of a trio of clans in Reggio Calabria, had been sentenced to life in absentia for murder and a range of mafia crimes. 'Ndrangheta, Italy's richest mafia because of its hold on the European cocaine trade, has spread from its Calabrian base to northern Italy.
A Milan regional councillor was arrested Wednesday for allegedly buying votes from one of the many 'Ndrangheta clans who have expanded their activity in and around Italy's business capital.
But 'Ndrangheta, whose name comes from an ancient Greek word for "virtue", has also strengthened its base on its home turf.
On Tuesday Reggio Calabria's city council was dissolved for ties to 'Ndrangheta.
