(ANSA) - Sassari, September 4 - Laid-off workers for the
insolvent Sardinian chemicals firm Vinyls, part of the giant ENI
fuels group, hung numerous life-sized dummies from a tower in
Porto Torres on Tuesday in protest to their continued
unemployment. The mannequins dressed in worker coveralls held signs reading "do you want this"? The Vinyls workers have made insistent appeals to the government to force ENI to either resume operations or find a buyer for the firm since the plant was closed in 2010.
Union leaders and local authorities will meet on Wednesday to discuss possibilities for the plant's resuscitation.
On Monday, Sardinian regional administrators and union leaders requested that Regional Governor Ugo Cappellacci join them September 17 in Rome for a meeting with the Ministry of Economic Development and directors of Vinyls.
