Facing drought, Italians praying for rain

Faithful look heavenward for end to scorching heat

(ANSA) - Padua, August 7 - Northern Italians are praying for rain.

Masses are being celebrated and prayers sent up asking the heavens to release some precipitation on drought-stricken farmland.

Various churches around the city of Padua have held special Masses, some ending with a prayer invoking God's intervention to end the drought.

Much of Italy has been scorching under record-setting temperatures that are nearing 40 degrees Celsius.
