Soccer: Cassano wants to play for Italy until World Cup

(ANSA) - Rome, July 10 - AC Milan forward Antonio Cassano has said he wants to keeping playing for Italy until the 2014 World Cup in Brazil after helping the Azzurri reach the final of Euro 2012.

"I still believe in this national team," the maverick striker told weekly gossip magazine Chi.

"Don't think that you've got rid of me. My aim is to play until the next World Cup in 2014".

Cassano, 29, won a race against time to return to action before the end of last season and regain his Italy place for Euro 2012 after having an operation on a heart defect that caused him to have a minor stroke in October.

He has been a central part of the national team since Cesare Prandelli took over as coach in 2010. Prandelli's predecessor Marcello Lippi regularly overlooked Cassano because of concerns about his explosive character.
