Soccer: Press hails 'great' Azzurri win over England (ANSA) - Rome, June 25 - The Italian press on Monday covered the national team in praise after they dominated England in a 0-0 draw in the Euro 2012 quarterfinals on Sunday before prevailing 4-2 on penalties to set up a last-four encounter with Germany.

"The suffering, the emotions, the feat of a beautiful Italy team," read the front-page headline of Corriere della Sera.

Il Messaggero beamed "Great Italy, England beaten on penalties". The Rome-based daily added that the Azzurri had given a "lesson to the old masters of soccer".

"And Let's Go!" proclaimed the front page of La Gazzetta dello Sport, Italy's biggest sport's newspaper.

Gazzetta carried an editorial which said Sunday's performance was Italy's best since they won the 2006 World Cup.

"There's an Italy that wins," it said. "It wins with heart, with class and with determination". Midfielder Andrea Pirlo was singled out by many pundits for praise for the way he helped Italy come from behind in the shoot-out, after Riccardo Montolivo missed his penalty, by coolly chipping in his spot-kick after England keeper Joe Hart dived.

Others picked keeper Gianluigi Buffon as their man of the match after he saved a spot-kick by England's Ashley Cole to give Alessandro Diamanti the chance to score the decisive penalty.
