Three million Italians have given up job hunt (ANSA) - Rome, April 19 - Nearly three million Italians are out of a job and have given up looking for one, a report said Thursday. Italian statistics agency Istat recorded 2.9 million so-called 'discouraged workers' in 2011, up 133,000 or 4.8% on the year.

The group accounts for 11.6% of the Italian workforce, three times higher than the European Union average. Combined with Italy's 2.1 million active job-seekers, the total number of those without a job but would like one is an estimated 5 million. photo: job applicants
