Pope to be feted at La Scala

Benedict will also visit San Siro for 7th World Family Meeting

Pope to be feted at La Scala (ANSA) - Vatican City, February 28 - Pope Benedict XVI will attend a concert in his honour at Milan's legendary La Scala opera house when he visits the northern Italian city in June, the Vatican said Tuesday.

The concert, conducted by Daniel Barenboim on the evening of Friday, June 1, will end the first of the pope's three days in Milan for the Catholic Church's 7th World Family Meeting.

Milan's mythical San Siro soccer stadium will be another venue for the pope, when he meets children set for the Catholic rite of confirmation at Saturday lunchtime.

Benedict will meet families in the town of Bresso, 8km north of Milan, on Saturday evening and say Mass at Bresso Airport on Sunday morning.

Milan Archbishop Angelo Scola said the trip would be "extraordinary" because the pope rarely visits an Italian city for more than one day.

This was due, Scola said, to the international nature of the event and also to the pope's "desire to come to Milan".

The last official papal visit to Italy's financial capital was by Benedict's predecessor John Paul II in 1984.
