Mafia arrests 'reveal local political contacts' (ANSA) - Rome, May 3 - Dozens of Mafia arrests in Naples and Calabria Tuesday highlighted political local links with the Mob in southern Italy, judicial sources said.

Forty suspected members of a top Camorra clan were taken into custody in Naples, two of them municipal candidates for Premier Silvio Berlusconi's People of Freedom party, who were promptly suspended from the party.

One of the candidates is the cousin of a boss and is accused of drug pushing and illegal weapons possession; the other is a white-collar worker who allegedly acted as a straw man for the Naples mafia.

In Calabria, 40 arrests linked to a top 'Ndrangheta mafia clan were made including a mayor and three local councillors including a centre-right provincial election candidate.

A policeman was also arrested.
