World Cup exit puts Azzurri out of top ten

(ANSA) - Rome, July 14 - Former world champions Italy slipped
from 5th to 11th in FIFA's world soccer rankings after their
early World Cup exit, the sport's ruling body said Wednesday.Freshly crowned champs Spain were top, followed by beaten finalists Netherlands in second and Brazil, down two spots to third. Italy was overtaken not only by the world's top teams but also by Egypt, who weren't at the World Cup, and Chile, beaten by Brazil in the second round.
Slovakia, whose 3-2 win over Marcello Lippi's men put the then holders out, gained 7 spots to 27th.
Uruguay, the surprise package of the South Africa tournament in reaching their first semi-final in 60 years, soared ten places to 6th.
