VENICE - Japanese architect Kazuyo Sejima has been named head of the Architecture sector for next year's edition of the Venice Biennale. Sejima, 53, is the first woman to get the job. "The Biennale must be everything, fundamentally inclusive, in constant dialogue with those who do it and those who see it," she said.
Biennale Foundation Chairman Paolo Baratta called Sejima "one of the most qualified and representative masters of 21st century architecture". Among Sejima's signature works are the New Museum of Contemporary Art in New York, the Serpentine Pavilion in London and the Christian Dior Building in the Japanese city of Omotesando. Another of her works in her homeland, the 21st Century Museum of Contemporary Art in Kanazawa, got the Biennale's Golden Lion in 2004. The 12th edition of the Biennale will run from August 29 to November 21, 2010.
