Presidente onorario della Classe Internazionale Finn (e finnista), ex olimpico ma soprattutto manager (anche in Coppa America), personaggio, appassionato, ex dirigente ISAF, indipendente. A 72 anni, lo spagnolo (globetrotter) Gerardo Seeliger annuncia la sua candudatura a Presidente di World Sailing. "Ho telefonato a Kim Andersen e scritto a Board e Council". Ecco chi è e cosa vuole fare
Il suo nome circolava, spesso sommessamente, a volte più forte. Sembrava quasi un sogno vederlo scendere in campo. Un omone solare, dinamico, creativo, problem-solver. Poi ci sono stati i suoi interventi, crescenti, di critica e appelli sulle recenti confusioni (eufemismo) in seno a World Sailing. Alla fine, ecco la notizia: dopo molte riflessioni, e in seguito a tante richieste dal mondo della vela, Gerardo si prepara a scendere in campo e annuncia la prossima candidatura per la presidenza della vela mondiale.
Ex olimpico Finn (1972), poi presidente della classe Finn, 40 anni di regate con tantissime barche, anche d'altomare, con partecipazioni a varie Admirals Cup, due Sardinia Cup, una Bermuda Race, la Giraglia, la Copa del Rey anche in equipaggio per il Bribon di Re Juan Carlos.
Sul fronte dell'impegno dirigenziale nello sport, Gerardo è stato per 18 anni presidente della Finn Class, e più avanti di 49er e 29er Class, quindi CEO della sfida spagnola all'America's Cup del 1995, con un ruolo di responsabilità nel Challenger of the record committee durante la Louis Vuitton Cup a San Diego.
Interessante il suo impegno nell'ex ISAF (oggi World Sailing) come presidente di due Committee: Marketing and Television Committee e International Classes. Argomenti forse ancor più importanti oggi. Ha collaborato con Gary Jobson e contribuito alla ricerca di sponsor per il premio Yachtsman of the Year Award, ha inventato la Christmas Race di Palamos, ed è stato tra gli artefici dell'inserimento del Match Racing alle Olimpiadi, nonchè tra i creatori del programma Emerging Nations supportato anche dal CIO.
Ultimo ma non certo meno importante: Seeliger ha lavorato proprio nel CIO sotto la presidenza del belga, ex velista ed ex finnista Jacques Rogge, in qualità di Executive Director dell'ANCO, l'associazione di tutti i Comitati Olimpici Nazionali, a Losanna e Parigi, sviluppando relazioni e competenze molto profonde nel mondo olimpico. A tutto questo si aggiunge una carriera da manager e in ruoli chiave di aziende multinazionali o quotate in borsa (il dettaglio nella sua lettera che pubblichiamo integralmente qua sotto).
Mica male, no? Gerardo Seeliger puo' essere per la vela mondiale l'uomo della provvidenza, di una nuova primavera dopo un quadriennio di palesi difficoltà dell'organismo davanti alle sfide del futuro per lo sport velico? Nella lettera Gerardo mette i punti fermi della sua candidatura: cose non certo secondarie al giorno d'oggi, come trasparenza, responsabilità, rispetto delle regole, buona governance. Quanto all'ente, gli obiettivi nel mirino del candidato spagnolo sono: incrementare l'efficienza, ridurre i costi operativi, aumentare e redistribuire le risorse, gestione ripensata del parco barche, ascolto, dialogo da velisti per i velisti, integrazione e inclusione.
A tutto questo Gerardo aggiunge di essere da oggi a disposizione di chiunque abbia idee o suggerimenti per il programma e la campagna. Belle parole, dite? Certamente meglio delle difficoltà attuali, di una World Sailing senza guida autorevole e in mano a gruppi famelici di interessi privati. La discesa in campo di un personaggio come Gerardo Seeliger, tra l'altro con un anticipo mai visto in precedenti tornate elettorali, rende sicuramente più interessante il futuro, e apre prospettive nuove, anzi finestre sul futuro che invece parevano destinate a restare chiuse. Certo ci sarà chi proverà a tirarlo per la giacchetta, e c'è da attendersi risposte o persino altre candidature da altri campi. Vedremo. Intanto, benvenuto e grazie.

Dear Finn sailors,
Over the last months I have received calls from many members of the sailing community, including many of you, encouraging me to become a candidate for President of World Sailing in 2020. I am writing to you now to let you know that I have decided to run, and to ask for your advice and support.
As a passionate and active competitor, I consider this encouragement from you and many sailors from the boat park as a true honour and a sign of sailor’s trust to face with success the significant challenges ahead.
When I decided to run, I called Kim Andersen and subsequently wrote to his World Sailing Board, to the Council and last week to all the 140 MNA Presidents. The responses I received were quite encouraging. Kim and some of the Board Members and many of the Council Members are long time friends. Some of us have worked together in IYRU, ISAF and WS for more than 40 years, and they know me well.
I want to contribute with my three areas of experience:
Sailing
I am still an active Finn sailor, in competition and cruising. I competed in the Finn at the 1972 Olympic Games, have participated in 20 European and World Championships in different classes, competed in three Admirals Cups, two Sardinia Cups, the Bermuda Race, Giraglia, Copa del Rey and many others and have sailed for many years as helmsman and crew on Bribon, the boat of HM King Juan Carlos.
Sports Administration
• I was President of the Finn Class for 18 years, as well as later being President of the 49er and 29er Class.
• I was the CEO of to Spanish America’s Cup Challenges and in 1995 the Chairman of the AC Challenger of Record Committee and the Louis Vuitton Cup in San Diego.
• I have served as President of the Marketing and Television Committee and the International Classes Committee of ISAF.
• With Gary Jobson we created the Yachtsman of the Year Award and negotiated the first sponsorship deal. I created the Christmas Race in Palamos and introduced, together with Tom Ehman and John Faire, Match Racing in the Olympic Games. I also created the Emerging Nations Program, supported by the IOC and corporate sponsors, for the Santander Worlds in 2014.
• I have worked within the IOC, under President Jacques Rogge, as Executive Director of ACNO in Lausanne and Paris and have always kept a close relationship with the IOC.
Business life
• I have enjoyed a successful business career with international search firms in the UK, US, and Europe and I’ve held executive roles with the Adidas Holding Company in Switzerland, international banking in New York and London including several start-ups.
• John Bertrand, the America’s Cup winner asked me to join Quokka Sports, the first Internet digital sports content company, quoted in NASDAQ, as MD Europe.
• Currently I manage a senior talent consulting firm and lecture in the IE Business School, according to the Financial Times, one of the leading schools in Europe.
As I anticipated in the interview with Tom Ehman of Sailing Illustrated, I now need to listen, learn and analyse, while keeping a prudent silence before opining.
The basic pillars of my candidacy are:

• Improve efficiency; Operating cost reduction; Identify, increase and redistribute new sources of revenue,
• Managing from the boat park; Listening; By sailors for sailors; Sailors first; Integration and Inclusion; ENP initiatives,
I look forward to talking to many of you soon to discuss the formidable challenge ahead, define a strategy and an action plan and create the team to face the 2020 elections.
