(ANSA) - TRIESTE, NOVEMBER 30 - EU's project INTER-CONNECT, which was presented at the CEI in Trieste, aims to enhance intermodal passenger transport and rail transport in the Ionian Adriatic region. ''INTER-CONNECT - Intermodality Promotion and Rail Renaissance in the Adriatic - Ionian Region'', which is developed under the ADRION Programme and funded by the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF) and the pre-accession assistance instrument (IPA II ), promotes intermodal passenger and rail transport in the Ionian Adriatic region, helping institutions and operators identify proposals to improve the intermodal connectivity within the area. The project entails an international partnership involving 7 countries (Albania, Croatia, Greece, Italy, Montenegro, Serbia and Slovenia).

Italy's members are the ENCE Executive Secretariat, the Institute for Transport and Logistics (ITL) and the Emilia-Romagna Region. The Fvg Region participates in the project as an associated partner and supports project actions being the authority responsible for local public transport policies. The duration of the project is 24 months (January 1, 2018 - December 31, 2019) and the budget amounts to 1.6m euros.

The project involves the construction of eight case studies (one in Trieste) and other training and cooperation initiatives. The Trieste-based case study aims to improve multimodal public transport connections, focusing on the connection between local public transport and maritime services, intermodal connections with transnational seasonal shipping lines, enhancing the accessibility of the Molo IV passenger terminal and planning a new maritime public transport service which will be ableto ensure the connection with Koper. The project was presented at the CEI headquarters in Trieste. The meeting was attended by the FVG Region, the Municipality of Trieste, Trieste Trasporti and the main stakeholders. Among the main topics of discussion was the integrated bus-train ticket, resulting from an agreement between Trieste Trasporti and Slovenske Zeleznice, regarding the Villa Opicina-Ljubljana railway connection, which will be operational from January to June 2019.
