Mobility: Hungary at top for use of bus and coaches

But few still use trains in some CEE countries

(ANSA) - BELGRADE, 17 SET - Hungary, with almost 22%, had the highest proportion of passenger-kilometers travelled by coaches, buses and trolley buses in 2016, Eurostat said today in a release for the 'European mobility week' (16 to 22 September).

According to Eurostat, in 2016, travel by car accounted for 83% of passenger-kilometers across the EU, compared with 9 % for coaches, buses and trolley buses, and 8 % for trains.

After Hungary, other Central- and Eastern European member countries registered a high proportion of passenger-kilometers travelled by coaches, buses and trolley buses. Among them, Estonia (17.9%), Czech Republic (17.1%), Slovakia (15.8%), Romania (15.7%), Latvia (15.1%), Poland (14.2%), Bulgaria (14.1%) and Croatia (12.3%).

On the contrary, the proportion of passenger-kilometers travelled by train is lower in certain CEE countries than the EU average, currently at 7.7%. Amomg the countries where the train is used the least, Lithuania (1%), Slovenia and Estonia (2%), Bulgaria (2.2%), Croatia (2.7%), Latvia (3.4%), Romania (4.2%) and Poland (7.3%). Austria had the highest proportion of passenger-kilometers (12 %) in 2016, Eurostat said.
